MY PUBLISHING JOURNEY – UNTITLED

We survived camping without getting too wet, in fact I even caught a decent tan.

I finished the read through for THEIR RIGHT TO VENGEANCE just before we left for the campsite in Dorset and rather than taking a book with me to read in the quiet moments, I took along the draft of the third book in the James Fisher series to see what sort of state I left it in.

After reading the first ten thousand words I was shocked to find it was in a much better shape than the draft I had to work with for book 2. It was so much better that it’s motivated me to start work on getting it ready rather than starting on my sci-fi time travelling project.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The manuscript for book three is bulging at 122,000 words and I’m currently 35,000 through the first read and edit. Much of the edit is dealing with punctuation, paragraphing, dealing with my old catch words such as leaned, eyes and a few more, and not so much on the actual prose itself which all means I’m progressing pretty quickly through it.

As I edit I’m mindful to pick out something I can use as a title, but I haven’t found it yet.

The structure runs on two timelines and from two perspectives, which is even more complex than the structure for THEIR RIGHT TO VENGEANCE, so I need to make sure I get the chapter / section headings right to aid recognition.

At this rate, assuming the quality of the prose is consistent throughout, I think I’ll be able to get this project over to my editor by the end of October, but certainly long before Christmas.

EVENTS

It’s Salisbury this weekend and I’ve asked for a spot in the main hall because I have historically performed much better in that location rather and in the atrium. The weather is looking pleasant and, as a well known tourist spot, I’m hopeful for good sales despite the England Woman’s World Cup match at midday. I may have the commentary on in my ear if the day is slow.

MARKETING & PROMOTION

I turned Facebook ads back on and it’s paying off, although yesterday was very low for some reason. The sales figures otherwise are not blowing my mind but it’s certainly getting me more profit than when I wasn’t running them. I will re-visit at the end of the month, unless they take a big down turn once again. I think I will try to reduce the number of ads down to two and see if they perform better, or perhaps even one ad image because that’s all I was using when I first started this new batch of ads and it worked really well.

That’s it for this week and next week I’m back to the day job. Boo! Comments and suggestions welcomed as always.

  • Hi GJ,

Fun! A time travel book. That is in my wheel house. Love reading and writing it. Hope it’s very timely. Back to work but keeping creative stuff going, right?

    Thank you, Gary
